What is House bill of lading and what is its purpose?
A House Bill of Lading (HBL) is a type of bill of lading issued by a freight forwarder or a Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) to the shipper as a receipt of goods and a contract of carriage. It serves as a document of title that facilitates the transfer of ownership and outlines the terms and conditions for the transportation of goods.
Why going digital with House BL?
Eliminate the need for traditional paper-based HBLs and reduce the risks of fraud, delays, and document loss.
Our Platform helps NVOCCs and freight forwarders streamline their processes by integrating digital HBL management into their workflows, enabling them to issue HBLs directly to shippers or consignees, receive real-time document status updates, and seamlessly communicate with existing logistics and ERP systems through API integrations.
Blockchain technology ensures that HBLs are secure and verifiable by creating immutable records that prevent alteration or forgery, restricting access to authorized parties, and maintaining a transparent audit trail to support compliance with international trade and shipping regulations.
Going digital reduces courier fees, printing costs, and administrative expenses across all documents. Faster documentation processes lead to reduced demurrage and detention charges.
Real-time document tracking and secure sharing enhance transparency in maritime operations.
Universally accepted format minimizes disputes and ensures consistent practices.
Paperless workflows align with global sustainability goals and reduce the shipping industry’s environmental impact.

Standardisation and compliance
CargoX Platfform align all three different regimes of standardisation:
1st
The first regime covers the general terms of carriage, governed by law specified in BL’s governing law clause.
2nd
The second regime pertains to the electronic features of the BL with the CargoX Platform being subject to English law and the Electronic Trade Documents Act (ETDA 2023).
3rd
The third regime involves customs clearance, governed by local regulations, which typically use copies of the BL. The validity of the electronic features of BL depends on the governing law analogously to traditional paper BLs governing law for the terms of carriage.
